A warm welcome!

Yes, a warm, spring welcome from your favourite newsletter. This time we’re kicking off with some pearls of wisdom from our own John Thompson. What this man doesn’t know about labels isn’t worth knowing…

Catching up with Mr. Labels

John Thompson is our Business Development Manager for the south and he’s been in the labels business – don’t tell him I said this – for donkey’s years. We’ve picked his brains to give you the measure of the expertise he brings to our lucky customers.

Elegant chap: John Thompson, County Labels’ Business Development Manager for the south

Q John, what do you do for customers?

I’m a problem solver. If a client is having a problem with labels, I can identify the reasons why and come up with a solution. Often it’s a case of using inappropriate materials. I find alternatives and new ideas and test them until they’re perfect. Clients love the results.

Q Where did you learn all this stuff?

I trained as a printer so I understand everything about ink and getting it onto any substrate. I studied to degree level in printing sciences and then covered all the supervisory studies from estimating to factory planning and production control. I became manager of my department on my 21st birthday. Latterly I ran my own print business, Consul Print and Packing, for 17 years and we had a £2.5 million turnover.

Q What do you bring to County Labels?

I bring a lot of technical knowledge. I’ve been friends with Jamie and Nik for years and they used to ring me up to solve print problems – so it’s great to be here now. My role is to offer clients better labels than their existing supplier is giving them. I can’t resist fixing things. I go round stores looking at labels. When I see something we can improve, I ring the company up and suggest new ideas.

Q How do County Labels compare to other labels suppliers?

They’re problem solvers like me. They’re innovative and full of ideas and they think laterally. They’re great people to work with and they run a solid company.

Q What do you enjoy outside work?

I’m a rugby fan. I know. Another reason I’m so at home at County Labels!

Mind your language

Ever had a print quote and wondered what on earth it all means? Print terminology can be tricky and printers like to baffle the unsuspecting with butt cuts, WELs , winding codes and hotfoils.

Never fear. In the interests of expanding your education, we’ve put together a handy glossary of print terms to make everything clear. Take a look here. I’ll be asking questions later.
